I am planning a painting called “Sparrow’s Serenade” that brings together a few ideas. It involves the symbioses of man and animals and the ability of certain birds that have adapted to the human environment. My subject this time is the humble house sparrow that can be found in King’s palaces and squatter camps.

My sparrow visits us while we have tea in the garden. The sparrow lands on the teacup for a moment. The teacup has a special significance. My wife loves her tea and always has a second cup. We have a collection of teacups from all our travels in the world.

The blue teacup is from Czechoslovakia. It holds special memories for us. This is more or less what I am planning. I am still experimenting with the use of gold leaf and my background handling.

“Sparrow’s Serenade, by Gerdus Bronn” is an enchanting painting of harmony and interconnectedness, I want to weave together the profound relationship between man and nature by captivating the bond shared between a humble house sparrow and one of our treasured blue teacups.

At the heart of the composition is the charismatic house sparrow, an embodiment of adaptability and resilience.

The teacup is the focal point of the artwork. The intricate golden accents embellishing the cup’s surface allude to my plan to incorporate gold leaf into the background, adding a touch of opulence and grandeur to the scene. The blue hue of the teacup harks back to its origin in Czechoslovakia, evoking memories of unforgettable travels and shared experiences that Annalie and I had visiting more than 36 countries at the writing of this blog.

The teacup

As the sparrow sits on the teacup, it seems to serenade its human companions, acknowledging the acceptance and mutual respect shared between species. The teacup becomes a bridge between the realms of nature and human civilization, a symbol of the harmony that can be achieved when we embrace the beauty of the natural world.

The planned golden background will be applied with meticulous care, I hope it will cast a soft glow and imbue the artwork with an aura of warmth.

Through this planned artwork I want to invite you to share the birth of this new painting. In the future, I hope to share my new ideas and process of how the paintings come together. Let me know by subscribing to my newsletters if you want to be part of this journey.

Sparrow’s Serenade by Gerdus Bronn will be painted at my South African studio at Silver Hills Gems in Hartbeespoort.
