The turtle and its life cycle will answer the many querries I have received about why I paint turtles.

My fascination with turtles started when I was a much younger person. On the Natal north coast close to Kosi Bay you will find a nesting area for turtles. This is where I first came face to face with sea turtles

On the Natal north coast the turtles come to make their nest. Using her back flippers, the reptile digs a nest in the sand. Digging the nest and laying her eggs usually takes from one to three hours, after which the mother turtle slowly drags herself back to the ocean. The sea turtle lays up to 100 eggs, which incubate in the warm sand for about 60 days.

I then encountered the turtles again when I relocated to Mauritius. I went snorkeling and came face to face with a turtle. They love the subtropical waters of the Indian Ocean.

I painted my first turtle and it was an immediate success. Up to now, I have painted several turtle paintings. My latest paintings take the turtle theme to the next level.

I add value to the different elements. There is the reflection above, then there is the vast spread of water, the freedom of movement. And then there is the sea floor where the turtle gets its food.

The underwater scenes used as a metaphor for life suggest a deeper exploration of the human experience and the idea of transformation and evolution. The ocean is often seen as a symbol of the unconscious mind and the depths of the human psyche, and the use of this imagery may suggest a desire to explore the hidden depths of the self.

Green turtles are one of the largest species of sea turtles and are found in tropical and subtropical waters around the world. They are named for the green color of their shell, which comes from their herbivorous diet of seagrasses and algae.

Green turtles are known for their long lifespans, with some individuals living up to 80 years or more. As they age, their shells become covered in algae and other marine organisms, giving them a greenish appearance.

The Habitat

I paint turtles in their habitat, green turtles are typically found in shallow coastal waters, seagrass beds, and coral reefs. They are also known to migrate long distances between their feeding and nesting grounds.

Overall, my artwork is driven by a desire to explore the beauty and complexity of the natural world, and to use this exploration as a means of exploring the human experience and the potential for growth and transformation.

The paintings are very textured with lots of vintage designs in the background.
